PHILIPPI, W.Va. --
Mike Davis gave the Battlers the lead with 53 seconds with a pair of free throws as the Alderson Broaddus men's basketball team knocked off Hillsdale 64-63 at Rex Pyles Arena in Great Midwest action.
The Battlers trailed 63-60 with 2:56 to play, but Davis hit a jumper at the 2:26 mark to trim the lead to 63-62. The teams went scoreless until Davis gave the Battlers the lead for good with a pair of free throws. The Chargers had a chance as time expired but Austen Yarian tip in attempt wouldn't go.
AB led 49-48 with 12:12 to play, Hillsdale answered with a 13-5 run to take a 61-54 lead with 7:26 to play. The Battlers chipped away at the lead using a 10-3 run to close out the game.
John Grayson put the Battlers up by five, 32-27, with a layup at the 5:32 mark of the first half. The Chargers answered with a 12-2 spurt to take a 39-34 lead with 59 seconds left in the first.
David Shriver hit a triple with eight seconds left to trim the halftime lead to 39-37.
Hillsdale opened the half with a free throw to push the lead to 40-37. The Battlers went on a 12-8 run to take their first lead of the second half 49-48 with 12:12 left.
Davis led the Battlers offense with 17 points to go with seven assists and four rebounds.
Brandon Simmons posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds as well as blocking four shots.
Davis Larson led the Chargers with 17 points. Dylan Lowry added 11.
The Battlers are back in action on Saturday when they host Findlay at 4 p.m. at Rex Pyles Arena. It will be Community Appreciation Night and all fans will get in free.
