Defense and 3-Point Shooting Lifts AB Men’s Basketball Over Davis & Elkins

PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- The Alderson Broaddus men's basketball team made 11 first half 3-pointers and posted their best defensive performance of the season to claim a 78-57 victory over rival Davis & Elkins Saturday afternoon inside Rex Pyles Arena.

The Battlers jumped on the Senators right out of the gate with David Shriver hitting four triples and Mike Davis made a pair of treys to put AB up 18-6 at the 16:09 mark of the first half.

Davis & Elkins scored the next four points to trim the lead to 18-10, but the Battlers answered with a 12-2 run keyed by five points from Coye Campbell to push the advantage to 30-12 with 9:16 left in the first. The Senators would trim the halftime lead to 41-27 with a 15-11 spurt to close the frame.

The Battlers' 3-point shooting cooled slightly in the second half, but the defensive effort didn't as the AB advantage swelled to as much as 28 in the second half before the Senators scored seven in the final 1:40 to set the final.

Davis paced three AB players in double figures with 20 points. Campbell tallied 15 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Shriver chipped in 14 points to go with six boards and two blocks. Bryan Polanco just missed a double-double with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Trevor English led the Senators with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

The Battlers continue Great Midwest play on Thursday when they host Malone. AB athletics will celebrate Survivors' Night in conjunction with Barbour County Relay for Life. All cancer survivors receive free admission and will be honored during the game. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
